McPhail's Cycle: A Legacy of Community and Passion
McPhail's Cycle and Sports is more than just a bike shop. It's a community, a place to foster passion, and generations of people choosing to be a part of something special. From its humble beginnings in 17-year-old Stu McPhail's garage back in 1916, McPhail's has grown into a cornerstone of the Kitchener-Waterloo community, shaped by people who love what they do.
From Stu's Garage to a Community Hub
It all started with Stu McPhail's dream. He launched the business out of his parents' garage with a simple goal: to serve the needs of local cyclists and sports enthusiasts. When Stu decided to pass the torch, Roy Marks, who had been working for him, stepped up. Roy and his wife, Peggy, took over the shop and carried on the tradition of hard work and dedication. Their efforts laid the foundation for what McPhail's would become—a place where people felt like they belonged.
A Family Business Through Generations
Gary Bonneville joined McPhail's at the age of 16. Although he once considered a different career path, the opportunity for profit-sharing convinced Gary to stay and eventually take ownership. Gary bought the business in 1989 and carried forward the legacy of community and service that Stu and Roy had built.
In 2015, Gary passed the baton to his children, Jordan and Jennifer Bonneville. Jennifer, who had a background in law and experience managing another sports store, wanted to create something of her own. Jordan, on the other hand, had made his way in professional hockey. Both chose to come back and keep McPhail’s in the family. Jordan and Jennifer’s commitment to growing the business shows that McPhail's is more than a store—it's a family legacy.
Looking to the Future
As the future of retail evolves, McPhail's remains committed to its roots. The vision for the shop is clear: to keep serving the community, to be a gathering place where you can get your skates sharpened, your bike tuned up, and your love for the outdoors renewed. Whether it's the rise of e-bikes or new ways to explore the city, McPhail's will continue to lead the pack, bringing people together through a shared passion for cycling.
More Than a Business
McPhail's Cycle and Sports is more than just a store; it's a story of people who chose to be a part of something greater. It's about generations who stayed with McPhail's, not just because it was their job, but because it was where their heart was. In a world full of choices, the McPhail's team and community have always chosen to stay—to belong.
